Roach Control: American vs German Cockroaches

One of the most important things to determine when you’re getting Roach control is what cockroach you’re dealing with. German vs American cockroaches infestations have many differences to help you figure out which pest you’re dealing with:

  • Location: Are they in your kitchen? Bathroom? Maybe they’re in your crawl space or in your drains? Finding them in the garage? The pantry? German cockroaches love your kitchens and bathrooms. Americans much prefer the darker corners of crawl spaces and drain.
  • How often you see them: If you’re dealing with multiple infestations, it’s likely that you’re seeing German cockroaches. They are much harder to get rid of, and many times, you have to try multiple treatments to see any differences.
  • Look: German cockroaches are much darker than American cockroaches. They are tan and have parallel lines on their bodies. However, American cockroaches are brown with yellow near their heads.
  • Size: American cockroaches are big—really big! They can grow to up to two inches long, so if the cockroaches are this size, you’re likely dealing with American. German cockroaches are usually smaller, about half an inch.

Cockroach Exterminator – FAQs

How do cockroaches get into my home?

Cockroaches, like any other insect, can enter your home through cracks or openings in the structure, such as damaged areas, or even through openings in or around doors and windows. They can sometimes get inside through containers or items brought in from outside, such as trash cans, bags, suitcases, shoes, children’s toys, and anything else brought in from outside. Pets can also track them in or bring them in as a gift for you.

How long do cockroaches live?

Many cockroach species can live for a year or more in the right environment! In her lifetime, a female roach can lay up to 320 eggs. She will conceal her egg capsules (which typically contain 14-18 eggs each) in a safe and secure location. Cockroaches reach maturity in about 160 days. Cockroaches are notoriously resilient, and when combined with a long life cycle and the possibility of each female producing more than 300 cockroach babies, a cockroach infestation must be dealt with quickly and effectively.

How do I spot cockroaches?

To begin, seeing a cockroach is probably the first indication that your home has a cockroach infestation. However, because they come out at night to feed. Unlike daytime pests like mosquitoes, chances of spotting them are slim unless your home is heavily infested. Second, their urine (especially in severe cases) may emit an unpleasant and musty odor, rendering the home uninhabitable. Third, look for any black dots or spots that are droppings, which are usually found in dark and enclosed areas such as cabinets and drawers or along the wall and back of the appliance. Fourth, there may be cockroach eggs, also known as oothecae, which can hatch up to thirty German cockroach nymphs at once.

Do cockroaches procreate quickly?

Yes. Female roaches can produce 200–300 offspring in a year due to their rapid reproduction cycle.
