In 2009 the American Journal of Epidemiology released a study indicating that Paraquat may cause a neurodegenerative process that could lead to Parkinson’s Disease. The study found that exposure to the chemical within 1,600 feet of one’s home increased the risk of the disease by 80%. In October 2017 lawsuits against the makers of Paraquat were filed in the U.S. District Court of California. Since that time there have been suits filed in federal district courts across the country all alleging similar causes of action.
What is Paraquat?
Paraquat is one of the oldest and widely used pesticides in the country. Since 2009 Paraquat usage has increased nearly 200%. Paraquat is a liquid that comes in various strengths. The EPA has classified Paraquat as “restricted use” meaning it can only be used by a licensed applicator.
Who is at Risk of Exposure?
Most commonly farm workers and property owners are at risk due to run off and over spray. These are not the only people at risk, however. Anyone that lives near a property that is using Paraquat for weed control including:

The extent of paraquat poisoning can vary depending on amount, route, and duration of exposure to the chemical. Paraquat can enter through the skin and become absorbed or inhaled causing severe lung damage. As mentioned above long-term exposure to paraquat could potentially cause neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease. In 2011, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences published a study finding that Parkinson’s Disease was strongly associated with Paraquat exposure. It identified that farmworkers received a Parkinson’s diagnosis at a rate of 2.5 times higher than those not exposed to the chemical.
Paraquat lawsuits include allegations that the manufacturers of the chemical knew about risks but failed to do anything about it.
