Motorcycle Safety

Posted in Motorcycle collision on August 2, 2018

Motorcyclists have the same responsibilities as other drivers on the road. Because they can be hard to see, it’s best to take extra precautions when riding a motorcycle. Here are 10 tips for new riders.

Tip #1 – Don’t buy a larger bike than you can handle. When shopping for a bike, make sure it’s easy to get on and off and is easy to balance. If the bike feels too heavy, it probably is.

Tip #2 – Wear a helmet. As explained in a previous blog, helmets help reduce the risk of cervical spine injuries from motorcycle crashes. Helmets aren’t required in all 50 states, but every rider or passenger should wear one.

Tip #3 – Check the weather. Wet conditions cut your visibility and reduces tire traction. If you are riding when an unexpected rain hits, be extra cautious and avoid making sudden maneuvers.

Tip #4 – Watch for road hazards. Bumps and potholes aren’t near as noticeable in cars as they are motorcycles. Slow down as much as possible before hitting them if they cannot be avoided.

Tip #5 – Get antilock brakes. A recent study shows that motorcycles with an ABS system are 37% less likely to be involved in a fatal collision.

Tip #6 – Practice before hitting the road. If this is your first-time riding, find a motorcycle safety course to take before riding on the open road. This helps you get a better feel for your bike and can teach you what to do in different scenarios.

Tip #7 – Wear the right clothing. Wearing jeans and a t-shirt is just asking for road rash if you’re in a collision. When you ride, choose leather or reinforced materials to prevent road rash.

Tip #8 – Know the rules of the road. Just because you’re on a motorcycle doesn’t mean you’re special and don’t have to abide by the same road rules as everyone else. Make sure you always follow traffic laws.

Tip #9 – Use your headlights. Always ride with your headlights on, even during the day. This will help with visibility.

Tip #10 – Assume you are invisible to other riders. This is the best way to stay safe. Make yourself visible to other drivers by positioning yourself in their mirrors. Avoid blind spots and weaving through traffic
