Large Truck Drowsy Driving

Drowsy and fatigued driving is one of the main causes of large trucking accidents. These accidents occur when drivers are not getting enough rest. Laws have been put in place to increase the amount of rest and breaks truck drivers are required to take during trips. Often, however, drivers choose to ignore the requirements in order to hit company goals, significantly increasing the chances of causing a serious collision.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drowsy driving is the cause for about 100,000 accidents and 1,550 fatalities per year, with large trucks involved in about 40% of the collisions. At least 750 fatalities and 20,000 serious injuries are caused by drowsy commercial truck drivers. 13% of truck drivers have admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, 75% admitted to committing driving errors from being drowsy, and 65% have admitted to having symptoms of fatigue while driving.

The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association) has been working over the last few years to reduce the number of hours truck drivers may travel without taking a break. Lack of sleep can cause similar effects to intoxication, including delayed reaction time. Sleep apnea, poor quality of sleep, medical conditions, and certain medications can also cause drowsy driving. These effects can occur long before a driver hits their limit on driving time.

Drivers need to be aware of their energy levels. This is the best way to decrease the chances of being in a collision. Since everyone is different, some drivers may become more tired sooner than others. Truck drivers need to be aware of when they need to pull off the road. They are responsible for driving safely and keeping the ones around them safe.
