Is it Safe to Ride a Motorcycle in the Winter?

While many motorcyclists enjoy riding during the spring, summer, and fall months, others prefer to continue riding throughout the winter. It is no surprise that the weather in West Virginia can be very unpredictable, especially during the winter, so it is imperative to take the necessary precautions to keep yourself and other drivers safe.

Proper motorcycle prep for winter driving – Ensure tires have the proper tread, brakes are working properly, and the antifreeze is adequately mixed. Take the time to clean your helmet and windshield of any ice or debris to guarantee good visibility.
Cold weather equals cold tires – Cold tires equate to limited traction. Riding helps increase heat in the tires, but even the briefest stops can cool the tires causing a lack of traction.
Watch for wintery road conditions – Winter weather means salt, black ice, and new cracks in the road. Drive slower than you normally would when driving conditions are not optimal.
Wear proper motorcycle gear – Riding comfortable in cold weather begins with the correct gear. Layering your clothing helps to keep you warm and provides extra and protection.
Increase visibility and following distance – Assume you are invisible to others. Make yourself more visible by positioning yourself in their mirrors. Avoid blind spots and weaving through traffic. Always ride with your headlights on, even during the day.
Avoid distractions – Distractions can be dangerous any time of the year, but the addition of ice and snow can make them more dangerous. Avoid using your phone, changing the radio station, or talking with other riders.
