Company involved in fatal collapse received prior citations

S & S Communications, one of the companies involved in the February 1, 2014 cell-phone tower collapse was previously cited by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration in 2009 after an employee fell to his death.

The 2009 fatal accident caused S & S Communications to receive two serious violations from OSHA and a fine total of $3,000. According to OSHA spokesperson, Scott Allen, the work incident occurred when an employee detached his harness to move to positions, but did not have the second required lanyard to prevent falling when moving about. There have also been reports of other S & S Communications workers having “defective components” in their lanyards.

The investigation for the recent accident in Harrison County, WV causing deaths of 3 people, could take up to six month. The investigation process includes conducting interviews, making measurements, Taking pictures, and gathering various documents. To date, there have been no details released about the OSHA investigation. OSHA has noted the concern that the injuries and fatalities on communication towers is on the rise.
