Adopting a child can be one of the happiest days for the child and parents alike. However, if adoptive parents decide to get a divorce, for whatever reason, they are still both legally responsible for their adopted child as they would be a biological child. The court system treats an adopted child just like a biological child. That means the court will take the same considerations when determining the child’s best interest if both parties cannot come up with a custody agreement.
Below are a few tips in dealing with a child’s custody.
- Follow the court’s order as far as child custody goes, unless the child is in danger. Failing to follow a custody order can further restrict a co-parent’s rights. If you believe your child is in danger from your co-parent’s behavior, contact the police immediately to document the issue and remove the child from their custody.
- Just because your child’s school functions, games, or appointments fall on a day where you don’t have custody, you should still attend. These are big moments to the child and efforts should be made by both parties to support them.
- If you’re having custody issues, you may want to consider getting legal help. Having an experienced attorney on your side can help resolve custody issues without relying on a judge each time.
Typically, family courts would prefer parents work out their custody problems on their own. If you need help coming up with an agreement, you should contact one of our experienced divorce attorneys to see how we can help.
